triOS College Spearheads New Women In Technology Scholarships

trios college [1]triOS College [1] is pleased to announce the creation of two new scholarships “Women in Gaming” and “Women in Information Technology” aimed at encouraging females to enter the growing technology sector.  As part of the college’s ongoing commitment to promoting careers in technology, triOS has created these $5,000 scholarships to enable women to get the skills they need to pursue successful careers in the technology and video game sectors.  Candidates can apply for the scholarships starting this May.

The technology sector in general is continuing to experience a shortage of skilled employees.  A study by the Information and Communications Technology Council (ICTC) reports that between now and 2016, Canadian businesses will need to hire more than 100,000 IT workers, making the technology sector a very viable one for both career establishment and career growth.  In a continuous effort to meet the demands of this industry, triOS first revamped all of its technology programs in 2012 to ensure proper synchronization between curriculum and marketable skills, and is now taking the next step by creating these distinguished scholarships.

triOS is working alongside numerous employers like Ray Sharma, President and Founder of mobile games studio XMG.  At triOS College’s Geek to Chic event, Sharma voiced his concern.  “Our single biggest issue in game development is the lack of female talent.  There is a massive disconnect between the female consuming audience and those that are developing games,” said Sharma.

Since technology affects all aspects of our economic, political, social and personal lives, it is important to encourage females to enter this field and start making a much needed impact.  The field is dominated by the male demographic, but it is time to change the industry and get women excited about the potential careers awaiting them.

“These scholarships are a definite indicator of how responsive triOS College is to the needs of both our employers and our students.  We listened to our employers when we revised the curriculum for our technology programs, and now we are answering their demand for more women in this sector by launching these scholarships.  Students also benefit significantly as they will have the right skills to find employment and also receive financial assistance with these scholarships,” said Wendy Churchill, Director of Academic and Employment Services.

On May 6, interested students can apply for the scholarship by logging onto a website and submitting an essay explaining why they should be awarded the scholarship.  The two scholarships winners will be announced June 1, 2013.  Full rules and regulations will be available on the scholarship site.
