Ubisoft Makes Major Game Announcements At Digital Days Event

ubisoft canadaToday at its Digital Days event, Ubisoft shared more details about several of its upcoming titles. First on the information list is Child of Light, a digital title to be released in 2014 on current- and next-generation platforms as well as PC.  The game is being created by a small team of seasoned developers based at Ubisoft Montreal. Child of Light has been developed on Ubisoft’s UbiArt Framework, a powerful engine that lets programmers and artists to bring their art to life by allowing original concept art to be inserted unedited into the game world. In Child of Light, the effect is that playing becomes akin to stepping into an interactive painting. 

Child of Light is a reimagining of classic fairytales, inviting players on an epic adventure into the magical painted world of Lemuria. Players will uncover mysteries, participate in turn-by-turn combat inspired by classic JRPGs, and explore the mystical kingdom. The game puts players in the shoes of Aurora, a child stolen from her home, who, in her quest to return, must bring back the sun, the moon and the stars held captive by the mysterious Queen of the Night. Helped by her companion Igniculus the firefly and several unlikely allies, Aurora will face her darkest fears, including dragons and other mystical creatures in this modern take on a coming-of-age story.

“Ubisoft’s strengths include its diversity and the freedom it gives its creative teams,” said Patrick Plourde, Creative Director, Ubisoft. “We want Child of Light to be like a playable poem, a love letter to art and video games.”

Also announced today were two additions to the Assassin’s Creed franchise – not being developed in Canada. Assassin’s Creed® Liberation HD, an adaptation of the highly acclaimed PlayStation® Vita success for consoles and PC, and Assassin’s Creed® Pirates, a mobile game dedicated to the naval combats introduced by Assassin’s Creed® III.

  • Assassin’s Creed Liberation HD features unique assassin gameplay mechanics, an immersive Assassin’s Creed storyline, and richly detailed high-definition graphics. Developed by Ubisoft Sofia, Assassin’s Creed Liberation HD is the striking chapter of the pre-American Revolution Assassin’s Creed saga, arriving for the first time as a digital title on Xbox® 360, PlayStation®3 and PC.

Taking full advantage of its new hardware, Liberation HD introduces a complete graphical overhaul, re-mastered music and sound effects, a revamped gameplay experience, and new missions that dive deeper into Aveline’s story:

The year is 1765. While the seeds of the American Revolution are being sewn in Boston and New York, Spanish forces in the South plot to seize control of Louisiana for the Templars, threatening to forever shift the balance of power in the New World. As Templars secretly take hold of the slave trade in New Orleans, Aveline de Grandpré, an assassin of mixed French and African heritage, stands ready to defend her people. She soon finds herself on an unforgettable journey that will take her from the crowded streets of New Orleans to voodoo-haunted swamps and ancient Mayan ruins. Whether eliminating her enemies with new assassination skills or luring them into cunning traps, Aveline strikes mortal fear into the hearts of those who would stand against freedom.

  • Assassin’s Creed Pirates is a standalone game for smartphones and tablets that will allow players to further explore the Caribbean during the Golden Age of piracy as Alonzo Batilia, a young and ambitious captain. Players will have to manage their crew, upgrade their ship, recruit new crew member and engage in huge real-time naval battles to become the most feared pirate of their time and claim La Buse’s legendary treasure. As in Assassin’s Creed IV®: Black Flag™, the Caribbean seas will become their hunting grounds.

Ubisoft Paris is developing a brand new mobile engine to bring groundbreaking 3D visuals to smartphones and tablets. As players sail those breathtaking moving waters and discover those lush islands, they should keep a watchful eye for the day’s cycle and the changing weather conditions that will directly impact gameplay.

Also coming to a PC near you is Tom Clancy’s EndWar Online for browser-based gameplay on PC and Mac. Developed by Ubisoft Shanghai, the team behind the console version of Tom Clancy’s EndWar®, Tom Clancy’s EndWar Online is a tactical and strategic MMO that offers real time battles, HQ and army management, and massive community-based wars, all set in next stage browser technology to deliver an unrivalled gameplay experience. As the latest game in the Tom Clancy’s EndWar world, Tom Clancy’s EndWar Online puts players in the shoes of the last leader in the aftermath of WW3.

Resources and money have run dry, factions are on the brink of collapse and rogue warlords have taken over. As one of the last leaders, players are tasked with rebuilding their homeland, reuniting their faction and spearheading the final battle for Earth’s remaining resources.  Players choose a side, the high-tech European Enforcers or Russia’s Spetsnaz who deploy brute force tactics, to lead into battle. Offering both single player and player vs. player challenges, Tom Clancy’s EndWar Online brings diverse gameplay options and deep strategy to gamers.

Tom Clancy’s EndWar Online is free-to-play and currently in closed beta. Fans interested in signing up or finding more information about the game can do so online.

Coming from Ubisoft Montpellier is Valiant Hearts The Great War, a new video game that gives players the chance to live a touching yet comical adventure which follows the story of five characters whose destinies cross during the Great War. Valiant Hearts The Great War will be available in the first quarter of 2014 on current- and next-generation platforms as well as PC.

The team at Ubisoft Montpellier is known for their work on critically-acclaimed titles like Beyond Good & Evil®, Rayman Origins® and Rayman® Legends. The team is using the UbiArt Framework to easily and efficiently animate the game’s comic-book style, which consists of a wide-ranging color palette – from the dank trenches to green forests and snowy fields – that provides stunning scenic variety and visual contrast. Ubisoft’s UbiArt Framework is a powerful engine that lets programmers and artists to bring their art to life by allowing original concept art to be inserted unedited into the game world.

The story of Valiant Hearts The Great War focuses on the journey of five people as they brave the battles and difficulties of the Great War following their faithful canine companion. The game is set in the Western Front, a crossroads between World War One’s Allied and Central Powers and home to some of the War’s most intense military confrontations. All of the main characters are inextricably drawn together, and friendship, love, sacrifice and tragedy befall each as they help each other to retain their humanity against the horrors of war.

“As the WW1 centennial approaches, we felt it was the right time to explore such a unique yet almost forgotten time period in our history” said Paul Tumelaire, Creative Director, Ubisoft. “The UbiArt Framework engine helps us to use a strong art direction and great character-driven story-telling to both entertain and engage players emotionally.”

Ubisoft also announced that the Rabbids are coming to smartphones and tablets this fall with Rabbids Big Bang. The Rabbids are making space their new playground in this physics-based game. Players will pilot the wacky little creatures using jetpack boosts and the gravitational force of planets, to avoid catastrophic accidents, fly around obstacles and explore the edges of the galaxy.

Developed by Ubisoft Paris studios, Rabbids Big Bang offers 150 different missions including crashing landing on planets, bouncing off of space cows and reaching specific speeds. The customization options in-game are plentiful. Jetpacks can be upgraded for an added boost or just a bit of flare and as Rabbids love dressing up, there are lots of disguises, new outfits and funny looks to make your Rabbid stand out! And as it’s Rabbids we are talking about, players will meet space duckies, cheese planets and feel the burn if they fly to close to the Sun!

In the studio’s final reveal of the day, Ubisoft proudly announced that legendary platforming hero Rayman will be back this fall on smartphones and tablets in a brand new adventure, Rayman Fiesta Run.

Following the success of Rayman Jungle Run, winner of the App Store’s BEST of 2012, Rayman Fiesta Run will introduce players to a new wacky Fiesta world. Gamers will lunge for cocktail umbrellas, leap on limes and punch piñatas in this playful, colorful musical adventure.

Rayman comes equipped with new powers and bonuses to take-on 75 levels in four brand new worlds. Facing epic bosses and new Invasion levels, Rayman Fiesta Run is fun for everyone to pick up and play, all the more since players can now share all their achievements thanks to new social features.

Rayman Fiesta Run puts on the polish, thanks to UBIArt Framework enhancements for in-game environments. UBIArt Framework is the same engine that brought players Rayman Legends and will soon allow players to discover new adventures with Child of Light and Valiant Hearts.
