After a successful and diverse turnout at last year’s 2012 GDC Play debut, GDC Play comes back to San Francisco in 2013. With this year’s return comes the introduction of Best in Play, a showcase of GDC Play’s finest games. For this new ‘Best in Play’ award program, all GDC Play exhibitors will be judged on their in-development or complete games by a panel of veteran GDC organizers and Gamasutra editors. Eight participating games will be selected and announced as ‘Best in Play’ winners prior to GDC. Winners will be announced mid-February and they will receive two All-Access passes to GDC 2014. Special ‘Best in Play’ designations will be attached to the honorees’ GDC Play kiosks at GDC 2013, where their games will be playable to all GDC attendees. Read the rest of this entry »

The YTA Technology Leadership Awards has matured to an annual top level GTA technology recognition event with 15 GTA technology companies named as nominees for industry leadership recognition, as well as two individuals for exceptional personal contributions to the sector and two post-secondary students pursing courses of study in preparation for careers in the technology industry. Game Connection has today announced the list of Selected Projects for Game Connection America 2013, 15 game developers and their projects that have been nominated for the prestigious “Best Project 2013” award. Sponsored by Microsoft, the contest is open to console, mobile, PC, social, casual, and online games at any stage of development and from any genre, and will be decided by the Game Connection Advisory Board at Game Connection America 2013, held March 25-27 at the Sir Francis Drake Hotel in San Francisco. Ram Raju, President and CEO of Kivuto Solutions Inc., an Ottawa-based complex digital distribution service provider, has received the IMPACT Award from the International Talent Acquisition Centre (In-TAC), another Ottawa-based organization that connects internationally-trained IT professionals with local employers. Raju received the award for his continuing support of In-TAC’s efforts through Kivuto’s proactive hiring practices. In 2012 alone, Kivuto hired 16 graduates of In-TAC’s employment programs. An overwhelming response to the annual Women in Games Scholarship offered by Vancouver Film School (VFS) has led to the unprecedented announcement of four recipients. Janel Jolly of Canada, Nicha Jaijadesuk of Thailand, Jaymee Mak of Australia, and Anna Prein of Russia have all been awarded a full-tuition scholarship to the one-year Game Design program. The top small businesses in B.C. were announced last night as the winners of the Successful You Awards Contest, hosted by Small Business BC. The winners proved their excellence in six categories over 170 other B.C. businesses during the course of a rigorous five-month contest. In order to be named among the best in B.C., the winners had to gain votes from the public to be shortlisted to the top ten, then submit an extended application detailing why they deserved to win. In a gala reception hosted by CTV journalist Seamus O’Regan, the second of three awards’ evenings presented by The Academy of Canadian Cinema & Television honoured 46 Canadian Screen Award winners in Drama, Children’s or Youth, Comedy and Variety categories, including the winners of four Academy Special Awards. The first annual Canadian Screen Awards will culminate with a broadcast gala hosted by comedian Martin Short, on Sunday, March 3rd at the Sony Centre for the Performing Arts. Fifty Canadian companies are being recognized today as the 2012 winners of Canada’s Best Managed Companies program for having demonstrated outstanding business performance and innovative management. Growth was at the top of the agenda for Canada’s Best Managed Companies in 2012. Best Managed winners made strategic investments in their companies, platforms, their systems and in their people and in turn, revenue and income grew substantially. Best Managed winners’ revenue grew by 14% to approximately $5.4 billion and more impressively, income grew by approximately 24%. Read the rest of this entry »
