Organizers have officially opened submissions for the 2013 Independent Games Festival, to be held at GDC 2013 in San Francisco next March. The longest-running and highest-profile independent video game festival, summit and showcase is now accepting entries to the 15th annual Festival, with deadlines in the Main and Student Showcase categories by October 17th and October 31st respectively, and finalists to be announced on January 2013. The XBLIG/XNA community is rising yet again after last year’s blazing hot Summer Uprising with the Indie Games Uprising III. Cambridge, UK based Frontier Developments Ltd. has announced that it is opening a new game development studio in Halifax, Nova Scotia. According to KPMG’s 2012 Competitive Alternatives report, Halifax ranks number one for cost competitiveness in video game production out of all global mature markets surveyed, and is in the top 10 out of all global mature and developing markets. Mobile social game and platform developer GREE has announced plans to establish a new game development studio in Vancouver. The new studio will be focused on creating new and unique free-to-play gaming experiences for mobile gamers worldwide. GREE’s Canadian studio will be headed-up by Steve Lin, a technology industry veteran and renowned retro game collector.
