Canadian 3D technology and multi-platform projects will be in the spotlight at the 50th edition of MIPTV, the global market for television and multi-platform content to be held in Cannes from April 8 to April 11, 2013. Innovation in content, technology and various platforms is one of the driving forces behind the Canadian audiovisual industry, enabling Canada to stand out on the international stage and generate interest from a wide-ranging audience base. Some 50 Canadian businesses will present their projects at MIPTV in the hopes of building partnerships and boosting sales worldwide. The Honourable Tony Clement, President of the Treasury Board, hosted a roundtable consultation in Edmonton today with high tech innovators, researchers and municipal Open Data leaders on the relaunch of the Government of Canada’s Open Data Portal. The Edmonton roundtable is the second in a series of cross-country consultations with the Open Data community and focuses on the features and content they would like to see on the new Open Data Portal set to launch later this year. Save BC Film has released the first of its PSA videos. These videos feature some of Vancouver’s finest talent, including Amanda Tapping (Stargate SG-1), Pascale Hutton (Arctic Air on CBC), Garry Chalk (Fringe), Alvin Sanders, Terence H. Winkless (Mighty Morphin Power Rangers), Tyler Labine (Reaper), Victoria Bidewell (Comforting Skin the movie), Keith Dallas, Manooj Sood (Little Mosque on the Prairie). The video, which was produced as a volunteer effort, is designed to raise public awareness about the state of BC’s film and television industry and to educate people about tax incentives and how they benefit the province’s economy. The Financial Consumer Agency of Canada (FCAC) has issued a Consumer Alert warning all Canadians to beware of unsolicited communications that claim to be from FCAC. FCAC does not initiate contact with individual consumers and has learned of a suspicious incident involving a letter addressed to a consumer that was supposedly sent by FCAC. It appeared to be on FCAC’s letterhead. The letter contained personal and financial information which the sender claimed was from the recipient’s credit history file, and asked the recipient to verify the information. Communications that misrepresent FCAC may be scams designed to collect personal and financial information in order to commit identity theft. Read the rest of this entry »

Telefilm Canada has announced its support for the production of eight English- and French-language feature films from all regions of the country through the Canada Feature Film Fund (CFFF). According to the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), many people find themselves becoming scam victims, thanks to the excitement of a surprise win or to claim prizes from fake lotteries, sweepstakes or contests. You may receive a phone call, an e-mail, a text message, or see a pop-up screen on your computer. Sometimes, there are claims that the offer is legal or ‘has government approval’. Often there are costs involved with claiming your prize. Instead of receiving a grand prize or fortune, you could lose every cent that you send to a scammer. Even if you do receive a prize, it may not be what was promised to you. And, if you have provided other personal details, your identity information could be misused for other criminal means. The Canada Media Fund (CMF) has announced Program Guidelines for the 2013-2014 fiscal year. It also announced the program budget for 2013-2014 set at $360.7 million. The 2013-2014 Program Budget is set at $360.7 million. The breakdown of the Program Budget can be viewed on the CMF website as a PDF. The CMF’s operating costs, including industry partnerships and program administration, have been reduced by 6 % in keeping with the objective to commit the most funds possible to its programs.
