Passport to Markets provides financial support to BC film and television companies so that they can attend international markets, and co-production conferences/ exchanges. This fund helps offset travel, accommodation, and registration expenses. The Canada Media Fund (CMF) announced today a contribution of more than $6.9 million to 28 innovative, interactive digital media content and software application companies that applied for funds as part of the Experimental Stream’s development and marketing programs. The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) has approved the sale of sport television channels owned by Maple Leafs Sports & Entertainment (MLSE) to BCE and Rogers Communications. While this $1, 32 billion transaction, involved several sports-related properties such as professional teams, the CRTC’s review was limited to the five television services owned by MLSE : Leafs TV, Gol TV and NBA TV Canada, as well as two services that have not yet launched, Mainstream Sports and Live Music Channel. CBC/Radio-Canada is astonished by the CRTC‘s decision to eliminate support for local television programming by discontinuing the Local Programming Improvement Fund (LPIF). The LPIF was established by the CRTC in 2008 to increase the quantity, quality and diversity of local programming produced by conventional TV stations in non-metropolitan markets. It was created in response to a decade-long decline of the financial model for local TV production in small markets, while cable and satellite companies that distribute the programming continued to generate record profits.
