The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) published the final regulations requiring Canadian broadcasters and broadcasting distributors to control the loudness of TV commercials by September 1, 2012. The Canada Media Fund (CMF) actively encourages and supports the production of value-added digital media content that is associated with CMF-funded television productions. In order to encourage maximum use of the Convergent Digital Media Incentive (CDMI) program, the CMF will broaden the current scope of the Digital Media Investment factor by also taking into account the CMF contribution to CDMI-funded projects in its calculation of the Digital Media Investment factor in 2013-2014 Performance Envelope calculations.  The revised manual is available online.

Canadian businesses are storing more and more personal information digitally, but many are not using the technological tools or implementing the recommended practices to protect this information, a new survey has found. In light of these findings, the Privacy Commissioner of Canada reminds businesses that when using technology to safeguard personal information, sometimes small steps can prevent a big loss. Canada’s largest telecommunications union has submitted a brief to the CRTC backing the demand of consumer and public interest groups for a national wireless code to protect consumer interests. As much as $4 billion is lost to consumers due to a lack of regulation in the telco industry, the Communications, Energy and Paperworkers Union of Canada notes in its submission to the CRTC’s Telecom Notice of Consultation.
