Taking place as part of inaugural GO Fest (Whistler Great Outdoors Festival) this weekend, Whistler Film Festival‘s Adventure Film Series features a 20-film lineup from six countries comprised of a selection of the world’s best independent outdoor, adventure films from extreme sport to activism through adventure. The series includes eight screenings over three days from May 16 to 18, 2014. Sailing, Surfing, Climbing, Mountain Climbing, Free skiing, Mountain Biking, Hiking, Ultra Marathon Running and Paddling are among some of the film themes, which include five features and three short programs. Ministry of International Trade is partnering with the BC Innovation Council and the Canadian Consulate (New York) to offer B.C. women in technology the opportunity to access the lucrative New York City market via its Canadian Technology Accelerator program. This one-day Vancouver event will target women-led or -managed B.C. companies with a technology product that may include mobile apps, e-commerce for fashion-retail, analytics, cloud computing, ad-technology, and gaming. The Princeton Review — one of the United States’ best-known education services companies — has issued its fifth annual report naming the undergraduate and graduate schools with the best programs for students to study video game design. The University of Southern California is #1 on both the undergraduate and graduate school lists (complete list is below) in the 2014 report which names 50 programs overall — 25 undergraduate and 25 graduate — in ranked order 1 to 25. Via Press Release: In 2011 the Video Game Industry took in over $16 billion dollars, but despite women representing 45% percent of the game playing audience they directed less than 2% of the Games. In combination with the production company Autobotika, The Fine Young Capitalists, a Canadian-Colombian initiative, is running their first production round, allowing any woman to have a crack at creating a video game. The Ottawa Network for Education (ONFE) today hosted an Apps Showcase to show off the accomplishments of high school students taking part in the TechU.me Mentor Program. The program’s industry and education partners – IBM, Adobe, and the four local school boards – were also on hand to announce new funding for the next phase of the program. TechU.me pairs elementary and high school students with industry mentors to develop mobile apps. In building these partnerships, TechU.me transforms student creativity into fundamental skills needed in the digital age – skills that will help these students succeed in their future careers. The Toronto Screenwriting Conference (TSC) has announced the recipients of the Telefilm Canada New Voices Award. Out of the forty-seven applicants representing nine provinces, from Newfoundland to the Northwest Territories, five emerging writers have received the award; Katherine Di Marino, Elene Mekete, Lea Nakonechny, Ashley Park and Jon Wayne Brown. The fifth annual Toronto Screenwriting Conference takes place at Ryerson University’s Ted Rogers School of Management on April 5 & 6, 2014.
