McAfee Canada has released findings from the company’s 2013 Love, Relationships and Technology survey which examines the pitfalls of sharing personal data in relationships and discloses how breakups can lead to privacy leaks online. Sixty (60) per cent of Canadian smartphone owners have personal and intimate information on their mobile devices, such as bank account information, passwords, credit cards and revealing photos, yet four out of 10 users do not have password protection on their devices, leaving a huge gap in personal data protection. The lines between home and work are blurring. With busy lives and packed schedules, Canadian families need a way to manage “one life”. They want to be able to work where, how and when they want – on their terms. According to an Ipsos Reid study released today, 70 per cent of Canadian parents depend on technology to keep their families connected, while 78 per cent believe that technology allows their families to stay better organized. This survey, commissioned by Microsoft Canada, found that Canadians believe their lives have grown more complex over the past three years, and as a result, are utilizing new technology such as smartphones and cloud services to connect with family members on-the-go and stay on top of their hectic schedules. When it comes to shopping, platforms like Facebook and Twitter aren’t replacing the in-store experience, says a PwC report on the myths of multi-channel spending released today. According to the Multi-Channel Retail Survey, while 42% of Canadians use social media at least once a day and an additional 17% use these channels once a week, just 7% of these consumers are using social platforms to shop. The love affair between Canadians and their smartphones intensified in 2012. According to the latest Rogers Innovation Report, commissioned by Vision Critical and released today by Rogers Communications, Nomophobia – the state of stress caused by being away from your smartphone – has gripped Canadian smartphone users. Sixty five per cent say they feel naked without their smartphone and Internet access. A little over half sleep with their device next to them, and 82 per cent use their smartphone in the bathroom. If necessary many Canadians would give up coffee or video games before saying goodbye to their smartphones, according to the results of a national survey released today by WIND Mobile. Thirty-seven percent of Canadian mobile phone owners aged 18-34 say they would give up video games before walking away from their devices, while 36 percent say they would be willing to quit drinking coffee rather than lose their phones. Active video games – also known as “exergames” – are often presented as a possible solution to getting kids to move more; however, following a rigorous scientific review, Active Healthy Kids Canada – and its strategic partners the Healthy Active Living and Obesity Research Group at the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario Research Institute (HALO-CHEO) and ParticipACTION – advises against them as a strategy to help kids be more physically active. A recent survey conducted by ORC International on behalf of Ganz, the creators of Webkinz reveals that while nearly 50 percent of parents believe technology is a great way to connect as a family, the majority (70 percent) still struggle with keeping up with their kids saying it’s time consuming, expensive or endless. To help conquer this divide, and timed with National Family Week (Nov. 18-24, 2012), the creators of Webkinz suggest dedicated co-play with parents and kids via their online or social platforms to bring families together.
