Through an initiative of Telefilm Canada in partnership with Foreign Affairs and International Trade (DFAIT), the Government of Canada and its partners are supporting Canada’s leading game development industry at the Game Developers Conference in San Francisco with prestigious meeting space, a networking event and a matchmaking program. In line with its new strategic vision Fostering Cultural Success, Telefilm Canada will select a contingent of 20 export-ready independent Canadian game development companies to support and showcase during GDC 2013. The Canada Media Fund (CMF) announced today a contribution of more than 4.2 million dollars to innovative projects receiving development and marketing support as part of the second round of its 2012-2013 Experimental Stream. In November 2012, the CMF announced a contribution of more than 10 million dollars to 15 projects who received production support. In 2012-2013, the CMF invested 36 million dollars in 87 projects who successfully applied to the Experimental Stream. Since its creation in April 2010, the CMF has provided more than 95 million dollars in funding to more than 250 innovative experimental projects originating from every region in Canada. CATAAlliance has launched an Advocacy Campaign to encourage the adoption of a Canadian form of the “Patent Box”, i.e., an “Innovation Box”. The Canadian “Innovation Box” would be tailored to provide a preferential, competitive tax regime for the successful exploitation and commercialization of Intellectual Property (IP), including patents, in Canada. The Canada Media Fund, Telefilm Canada and the CRTC (Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission) have announced the creation of a Working Group resulting from industry leaders’ feedback at the Symposium on the Promotion of Canadian Films and Television Programs in Canada and Internationally. The Working Group will promote the increasing success of Canadian film, television and digital media with a principal focus on the Canadian market. The intent is to show how much Canadian innovative screen-based content is now watched and enjoyed by Canadian audiences and to propose solutions on how to build on past, current and future successes to increase awareness of our media products. The CMF announced yesterday that the English Regional Pre-Development Program, launched earlier this month, is now closed due to a high number of eligible applications received. The CMF will no longer be accepting applications from producers who wish to receive funds for pre-development as part of this program. The English Regional Pre-Development Program, designed in consultation industry stakeholders, is intended to support producers in their preparation of documents to present to broadcasters at the early stages of development.
