The SIGGRAPH 2014 Studio, 10-14 August at the Vancouver Convention Centre, presents an exciting array of Talks, Courses and Projects that demonstrate the latest advances in technology. The Studio offers a collaborative working environment where attendees can come together to learn, experiment, and create. The Animation Project (TAP) in New York has pioneered a novel and effective method for helping at-risk youth: Use digital art technology as a therapeutic medium and workforce development tool. To support this effort, PNY, Intel and Red Barn Technology Group contributed to the creation of a new classroom of graphics workstations to assist TAP in its endeavors. Capitalizing on youth’s natural interest in new media, The Animation Project engages at-risk kids in digital art-fueled group therapy sessions that cultivate self-expression, improve self-esteem, enhance social and emotional coping skills—while simultaneously fostering the development of practical computer competencies that transfer to a variety of career and education paths. SIGGRAPH 2014, 10-14 August, has released its list of 2014 Emerging Technologies highlights to be featured at this year?s conference at the Vancouver Convention Centre. Out of almost 90 submissions to the program, 24 were accepted, with more than 20 pieces from submitters outside of the United States. Each year, SIGGRAPH-selected emerging technologies allow conference attendees to play with the latest interactive and graphics developments. The program also presents demonstrations of research in several fields — like displays, input devices, collaborative environments, and robotics — through Talks and a close partnership with the SIGGRAPH Studio. Minister of Technology, Innovation and Citizens’ Services Andrew Wilkinson has released a video that highlights SIGGRAPH 2014, the world’s foremost computer graphics and art conference coming to the Vancouver Convention Centre August 10-14, 2014. Over 15,000 artists, programmers, filmmakers, computer scientists, animators, game designers and others involved in computer graphics, film making, video games and hardware will be in Vancouver over the four days of the conference. The Casual Games Association, the host of Casual Connect USA, declared 13 winners of the Indie Prize Showcase during a special awards ceremony. This showcase was sponsored by Facebook, Everyplay, Unity, and SKYmobi, with award prizes donated by Unity, App Promo, Photon Realtime, deltaDNA, 5th Planet Games, Intel, polljoy, Splitforce, Plantronics, Marmalade and Everyplay. The Documentary Media Society is providing four people with behind-the-scenes work experience, thanks to more than $25,000 in Job Creation Partnership funding. The DOXA Engagement Project will provide up to 29 weeks of on-the-job training at the non-profit media society that runs the DOXA Documentary Film Festival. British Columbia’s innovative and creative casual games industry will showcase their talents at the professionals-only Casual Connect conference in San Francisco today and tomorrow. The B.C. government will be there to support them by providing meeting space and business-to-business matchmaking.
