Bestselling author, entrepreneur and one of the world’s top business Thinkers50, Don Tapscott will officially be installed as Trent University‘s eleventh chancellor during the campus’ convocation ceremonies on Friday, June 7 at 10am. As part of the installation ceremony, Mr. Tapscott will address graduating students, their families and members of the Trent community prior to the conferring of degrees. Following the presentation of degrees, Mr. Tapscott will officially be installed as chancellor by taking the Oath of Office. Representatives of different sectors of the University, including faculty, the Board of Governors and alumni, will divest Mr. Tapscott of his honorary robes and invest him with his chancellor robes to complete the installation. A new report released today by the Canadian Wireless Telecommunications Association (CWTA) reveals the Canadian wireless sector generated an overall economic benefit of $50.2 billion in 2011, an increase of 16.7% from the $43 billion in 2010. The Benefit of the Wireless Telecommunications Industry to the Canadian Economy study, conducted by Nordicity, concludes that the Canadian wireless sector’s economic benefit has increased dramatically, as Canadians’ adoption of smartphones, tablets and mobile data services and applications has also increased at a rapid pace. Rogers Communications, along with Microsoft Canada and Compugen, has announced a new broadband internet pilot project called Connected for Success that will provide affordable broadband internet, computers and software to Toronto Community Housing (TCH). Canadian women are significantly underrepresented in key creative and content-creating roles in Canada’s TV production industry. This means the stories and values communicated through the influential and far-reaching medium of television are badly skewed, according to a report released today by non-profit organization Women in View. In its report Women in View on TV 2013, the organization examined 21 Canadian live action television series, which, in 2010-2011, received a total of $99.1 million in public funding by the government’s Canada Media Fund. Productions examined include Being Erica, Flashpoint, The Listener, Rookie Blue, Republic of Doyle, The Borgias, Heartland, Murdoch Mysteries, Hiccups, Lost Girl, and Little Mosque on the Prairie. In a keynote address at the Ottawa International Game Conference (OIGC), Jayson Hilchie, President & CEO of the Entertainment Software Association of Canada (ESAC) today unveiled new research about the Canadian video game industry. The research shows that Canada’s overall video game industry is still growing at a moderate pace, even as the sector and its business models continue to evolve. Unveiling top-line results from new research conducted by Nordicity for ESAC, Hilchie showed that Canada’s 329 video game studios are a critical component of this country’s new digital economy generating over $2.3 billion in GDP for the Canadian economy in 2012.
