In 2012, The Missing Children Society of Canada (MCSC) introduced The World’s Most Valuable Social Network – the first online search party that allows Canadians to “donate” their Facebook or Twitter newsfeed as a vehicle for raising awareness when a child goes missing. The World’s Most Valuable Social Network has assisted in the safe return of six missing children since its launch, and the tool is expanding to include Pinterest and Foursquare in the search for missing children. Up to 50,000 children are reported missing in Canada every year. Today, leading up to International Missing Children’s Day (May 25th), MCSC is expanding The Most Valuable Project with the launch of two new digital tools: Most Valuable Check-In and Most Valuable Pinboard. Three Ottawa high school friends are the first Canadian grand prize winners of Trend Micro‘s fourth annual “What’s Your Story?”, an international video contest promoting safety on line. “What’s Your Story?” an award-winning, user-generated video contest is an interactive platform for young people to showcase their creative talents, and harness the positive power, reach and connection through storytelling. The 2013 contest received entries from both individuals and schools across Canada and the United States answering the question, “What does the good side of the Internet look like?” for a chance to win one of two $10,000 grand prizes. PayPal has revealed the findings of a global study that paints a dim future for the wallet, especially in the Canadian market. Almost nine in ten (87%) Canadians indicated they wished they did not have to carry a wallet followed by a vast majority (83%) of respondents across five countries (Australia, Canada, Germany, the U.S. and the U.K.) wishing they were wallet-free. Nearly one in four Canadians (23%) and almost half of Canadians (47.9%) between the ages of 18 and 24 would choose a smartphone over a wallet if they could only bring one item when going out. Those in Ontario (28%) and the Prairies (23%) were most likely to choose their smartphone over their wallet. Read the rest of this entry »

The Business Development Bank of Canada (BDC) announced today the winners of its 13th annual BDC E-Spirit Business Plan Competition. Gold, Silver, and Bronze were awarded to the “Kanata of Youth” team from Winnipeg, MB, “Frisbis” team from Coldstream, BC, and the “Onimiki” team from Maniwaki, QC, at a ceremony held at Thompson Rivers University in Kamloops. A total of 34 teams of Aboriginal students from across Canada participated in the competition. The three winning teams received cash prizes in the amount of $1,500 for Gold, $750 for Silver and $500 for Bronze. After five successful years of helping nearly 50 high schools across Canada transform their classrooms into modern learning centres, Future Shop‘s Future Generation Tech Lab program has announced the expansion of its grant opportunities to elementary schools. These grants will award up to $100,000 to public schools with grades ranging from kindergarten up to and including grade eight and secondary 2 in Quebec. A new study from BSA | The Software Alliance and INSEAD, one of the world’s leading business schools, finds that increasing the use of properly licensed software would have a greater impact on the economy in Canada than allowing similar growth in the use of pirated software. A one per cent increase in use of licensed software would generate an estimated $2.25 billion, in national production, compared to $521 million from a similar increase in pirated software — meaning properly licensed software would deliver $1.73 billion in additional economic value. Telefilm Canada is partnering with Vancouver’s CineCoup Film Accelerator, a reality-show style competition to provide a million dollars to fund a new feature film, as part of the funding agency’s newly minted New Ways of Discovering Canadian Talent marketing campaign. On Sunday, Telefilm presented CineCoup President of Distribution and Sales, Brad Pelman, to industry players and media during its Talent To Watch event at the Cannes Film Festival.
